Sat,
Dear
Jordan,
You
probably think that I am crazy about now, but I got something to ask. How can being a gay Christian be an
oxymoron? All are sinners. People who get divorced aren't considered an
oxymoron if they call themselves Christians, and Jesus was really against
it. There should be lots of things
talking about divorce and killing. The
reason I say this, is because there is lots of violence against gays. I don't think that God abandons somebody
because they are gay. There are lots of
gay teenagers who kill themselves, because of pressures.
Thanks
for reading this.
Sincerely,
Thursday
23 Jan.
Dear
Georgia,
No, I do
not think you are crazy, either from our previous correspondence or here. Your
concern is an understandable one. Bear in mind, however, that I am no
theologian or biblical authority. I am, though, someone who rejected the
Christian faith for many years prior to ultimately embracing it. From that
standpoint, I can offer my perspective.
One of my
many but strongest criticisms of the faith throughout my atheism was that,
indeed, gays and lesbians suffered a harder beating from Christian zealots than
other sinners. One thing all too many Christian political zealots overlook is
that gays have a legal right to be gay (in most states anyway). Most of my
concerns regarding sin and Christianity from a political standpoint are
presented in my essay http://www.theism.net/authors/zjordan/docs_files/stone_files/stone.htm.
With my
political aspect of all sin presented in the essay, let us consider the
Christian-walk aspect. Un-repentant sin is the issue. It has been my experience
with members of the gay community that gays demand that they remain in God’s
grace whilst continuing their gay practice. As you presented, “I don't think
that God abandons somebody because they are gay.” I figure a more accurate
statement would be, “Some people abandon God so they can be gay.”
Can
and will God forgive gay persons? You bet! Please do not delude yourself into
thinking that gay persons are merely born that way, therefore, they have no choice.
Humans are born into sin(!) of all kinds! That is why
some of us choose to leave our sin at THE CROSS.
If
homosexuality were a genetic curse, twins who go in different directions would
be scientific miracles. Many former homosexuals have experienced the miraculous
turnarounds that other sinners experienced after coming to know the Lord. I
personally know one former homosexual who made the turnaround. I was still an
atheist when he presented me his story but I found it interesting that his
religious conversion led him where it did. Contemporary Christian music
presented another (Dennis Jernigan) who made the turnaround.
In
response to your post regarding violence on gays, I know of no biblical
backing. If you know of such, please advise me. Though God may speak harshly
against homosexuality, I know of no verse commanding Christians to do
homosexuals harm. We are to love them unconditionally. Though God elsewhere
claims that our (Christian) works amount to no more than stinking rags, nowhere
does He command us to treat our fellow Christians’ works as stink-filled. We as
Christians are to love; God is to judge us all. “Judge not lest ye be judged”
(somewhere in Christ’s New testament).
I have
more forthcoming after putting this out to a couple e-groups for their input.
Until and
after then, you remain welcome to write me.
In Him,

Hey bud,
It's right on; all I can add is that from my work in
the prisons I know that folks are fully capable of switching
"gayness" on and off like a light switch.
Take care and God bless,
